Lorem Ipsum Generator — Random Placeholder Text

During the wireframing phase, the goal is to establish layout, information hierarchy, and spacing — not to write final copy. Using Lorem Ipsum prevents reviewers from focusing on the words instead of the design structure. A wireframe with real content tempts stakeholders to edit the copy rather than evaluate the layout. Placeholder text keeps the conversation focused on what matters at that stage: column width, font size, button placement, and visual flow.

When presenting design prototypes to clients before copywriting is complete, Lorem Ipsum signals clearly that the text is a placeholder. Clients understand the convention and are less likely to comment on phrasing. This is especially important in multi-stakeholder presentations where non-designers might otherwise red-line the placeholder text or ask questions about content that has not been written yet. For interactive prototypes in Figma or Adobe XD, generated Lorem Ipsum fills in realistic-looking text blocks without requiring real content.

In print design — brochures, magazines, annual reports — Lorem Ipsum has been the standard placeholder since the 16th century. Typesetters used it to demonstrate typefaces without the distraction of meaningful content. Today, InDesign and other page layout tools include Lorem Ipsum generators built in. Use it to check line spacing (leading), column width, hyphenation rules, and text frame overflow before final copy arrives from the copywriter.

Lorem Ipsum produces artificially uniform text — similar word lengths, no unusual punctuation, no very long words or very short paragraphs. Real copy often behaves differently: a product name might be much longer than expected, a legal disclaimer might need four paragraphs, or a headline might be a single short word. These variations can break layouts that looked perfect with placeholder text. For navigation items, button labels, and headlines, always use real or realistic content even in early mockups.

Font size, line height, and column width decisions made with Lorem Ipsum may not hold up when real content arrives. If your design has a sidebar with five navigation items and all the Lorem Ipsum items are roughly equal length, you may not notice that the layout breaks when one item wraps to two lines. For any UI element where text length varies significantly — tabs, menus, card titles, tags — use realistic text samples rather than generic Lorem Ipsum. The extra effort prevents costly design revisions later.

Some design methodologies advocate for a content-first approach, where the actual text is written before the design begins. This eliminates the Lorem Ipsum problem entirely by ensuring the layout responds to real content constraints from the start. For landing pages, email templates, and short-form content, a content-first approach often produces better results because typographic choices and whitespace decisions are made in response to the actual message, not hypothetical placeholder text.
